Hello Green Thumbs of Barrie

There are 20 plots available to be rented starting January 4th. It is first come first serve to rent these plots. It is an important day to show the City of Barrie there is demand and interest for this project.

There is more information on the City of Barrie website, including a basic garden contract and rental information. With taxes it costs $22.60 for the plot rental for the entire season of 2010. It's a great deal!

Remember community garden's are ideal places for novices to begin gardening. It's also a great place for advance gardeners to share their knowledge and stay connected to a gardening community. Let's show the City of Barrie the interest and support for this project to thrive and grow!

Community Garden pilot project

The community garden build took place on the weekend of November 14 and 15. It was well attended by helpful volunteers. The method used to build the garden is called sheet composting (lasagna gardening), a permaculture method that mimics natures and creates healthy gardens. With this method there is no need to till.

The community garden is located on Coulter St. beside the off-leash dog run. Plots will be available for rent at $20 a season on January 4 from the City of Barrie. More information to follow on this soon. There will be twenty plots available for rent. This project is in partnership with Living Green and the City of Barrie.

If you have any questions or interest in the community garden project, please contact Kyla Cotton through her website www.urbanharvester.ca. Kyla is the garden coordinator for the 2010 season.

We took a break from our hard work to enjoy some Fair Trade coffee and lunch prepared by Kyla Cotton.

After lunch we got back to work. Layering the cardboard and compost

Kyla stop fooling around with those rakes and get to work!

Making more progress as the day wore on. We would lay down cardboard boxes on top of the grass and then cover it with compost.

We also used leaves for sheet composting.  Layer of leaves then a layer of compost.

Here is the garden with 20 plots and paths built.  It was hard work but it is worth it to have more food grown in Barrie.
