Living Green Barrie, formerly known as Environmental Action
Barrie (EAB) is a citizen's group founded in 1990 by a group
of dedicated people who were concerned about the environmental
issues facing their community. The group believed action taken
at the local level is key to increasing general awareness and
mobilizing public support for a healthy environment. Towards
this end, Living Green has designed projects aimed at providing
the public with "green" consumer information, "hands-on"
volunteer experiences and a variety of awareness and educational
experiences.
EAB officially incorporated as a Not-For-Profit Corporation
in December of 1991, relying on a 12 member board of directors
to oversee the organization's projects. The receipt of a grant
through the federal government's Environmental Partner's Fund
in 1992 permitted EAB to expand and intensify its efforts by
renting its first premises (The Environmental Action Centre)
and hiring three staff members. This Centre served as an office
facility for business and education outreach coordinators, as
well as a "storefront" site for public outreach programs.
In May of 1993 EAB officially received registered charitable
status.
In September of 1993, EAB began exploring additional funding
and program potentials by developing a proposal for the provincial
Ministry of Environment and Energy, through their "Green
Communities Initiative". As a result, "BE GREEN BARRIE"
was launched in November 1994. Between 1994 and 1996, in partnership
with the City of Barrie and various others, the Be Green Barrie"
project successfully installed over 5,000 low flow toilets in
Barrie in conjunction with Green Home Visits, helping homeowners
reduce waster, energy and water use.
Coming to an end in 1995, the organization regrouped again
as "Environmental Action Barrie" and has managed to
continue many community outreach and service programs. The most
popular and consistent of these are the Alternative Recycling
Depot, Enviromart, Greenspace(projects and campaigns) and public
forums and special events. The newest home visit program, adopted
in October of 1998, is called Energuide for Houses, a comprehensive
high-tech assessment of a home's energy efficiency.
In August of 2002 "Environmental Action Barrie" adopted
"Living Green" as its public name. Trillium funds
were received to develop a Strategic Business Plan.
The location of 34 Ross Street where offices and storefront
were managed by one staff person and several volunteers was
closed. A website was developed www.livinggreen.info to act
as our virtual office and communicate with the community and
members via email. In May 2008, the group consolidated it's
previous name (Environmental Action Barrie), it's public name
(Living Green) and it's internet presence (www.livinggreen.info)
to be known simply as "Living Green Barrie" (www.livinggreenbarrie.com)
